{"id":323471,"date":"2024-11-10T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-10T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\/?p=323471"},"modified":"2024-11-10T21:36:04","modified_gmt":"2024-11-10T08:36:04","slug":"ninja-a-league-round-2-match-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\/news\/ninja-a-league-round-2-match-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Ninja A-League Round 2 Match Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Wellington Phoenix have cruelly fallen to their second straight defeat to start the Ninja A-League season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Phoenix have been beaten 1-0 by Canberra United in their home opener at Porirua Park despite dominating much of the match.<br><br>The Nix had two thirds of possession, completed more than twice the number of passes than the visitors and had 18 shots to Canberra\u2019s eight.<br><br>Matildas forward Michelle Heyman was the difference-maker, with the Canberra captain\u2019s 100<sup>th<\/sup> goal for the club in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> minute separating the two sides.<br><br>Phoenix head coach Paul Temple says he\u2019s \u201cnot worried\u201d despite having yet to register a point two rounds into the season.<br><br>\u201cI think we\u2019re playing really well,\u201d Temple told media post-match. \u201cWe\u2019re creating so many opportunities. We\u2019re just not taking them.<br><br>\u201cI think we had one in the first few seconds of the second half and if that goes in the whole game changes.<br><br>\u201cThose chances are huge, and we just have to work on that and keep practicing that and it\u2019ll come right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Match Highlights | Wellington Phoenix Women vs Canberra United\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bq3-B-7-IXU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Temple believes their luck will turn over the next 21 rounds.<br><br>\u201cIt\u2019s still so early in the season. (Photo by Masanori Udagawa\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Temple made one change to the XI which started the season opening 4-2 defeat to Western United with Zoe McMeeken replacing Mebae Tanaka at wingback. English forward Olivia Fergusson was named amongst the substitutes after missing the season opener with injury.<br><br>The Phoenix had two thirds of possession in the first 45 minutes but had nothing for show for it at halftime.<br><br>Michelle Heyman put the visitors in front little over 10 minutes into the match, slotting home her milestone goal after being teed up by Maja Markovski.<br><br>The Nix\u2019s best chances to level came midway through the first half. Manaia Elliott blazed a volley over the bar from six yards out in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> minute and soon after the hosts\u2019 blew a two-on-one when Alyssa Whinham was unable to thread a pass through to Grace Jale, who would have been through on goal.<br><br>Carolina Vil\u00e3o ensured Wellington went to the break just a goal down when she bravely snuffed out an opportunity for Aideen Keane by diving at the feet of the Canberra winger. (Photo by Masanori Udagawa\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Phoenix were threatening in the second half and they had a gilt-edged chance to equalise just seconds after the restart, but Elliott sliced her shot wide of the near post.<br><br>Canberra goalkeeper Sally James made a sharp save in the 52<sup>nd<\/sup> to deny Grace Jale\u2019s header from a corner and soon after James did well to get her body behind a powerful shot from Emma Main.<br><br>The Nix came within inches of drawing level shortly before the hour mark when Alyssa Whinham struck the right post after finding a bit of space at the top of the box.<br><br>Whinham was in the thick of the action for Wellington and had a great opportunity in the 65<sup>th<\/sup> minute after Canberra were unable to deal with a piercing pass from Jale. Unfortunately for the attacking midfielder and the Phoenix, Whinham put her volley over the bar.<br><br>Temple made his first tactical substitutions with a quarter of an hour remaining, bringing on Mebae Tanaka and Lara Wall on for Alyssa Winham and Zoe McMeeken respectively.
