{"id":324675,"date":"2025-03-02T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-02T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\/?p=324675"},"modified":"2025-03-03T09:38:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-02T20:38:47","slug":"ninja-a-league-match-review-round-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\/news\/ninja-a-league-match-review-round-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Ninja A-League Round 17 Match Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Wellington Phoenix\u2019s five game unbeaten streak at Porirua Park has come to an end in an ill-tempered match despite a heroic performance from Carolina Vil\u00e3o.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her penalty save and Olivia Fergusson\u2019s solo stunner were not enough to trump Adelaide United, who took the points back across the Tasman with a 3-1 win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head coach Paul Temple was disappointed with what he felt was an underwhelming performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom our perspective we were not really at it, I didn\u2019t think,\u201d he told media post-match. \u201cAdelaide were the better team and ultimately deserved to win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought they won far more battles [and] duels and kept turning our back four around and using that front three of theirs to good effect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was hard to break their momentum. They won that middle of the park battle really.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reserved high praise for Adelaide, but still felt the Nix could have offered more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI genuinely think they\u2019ll go really close to winning the whole thing. They\u2019re just a good team and in my view they\u2019re the hardest team we\u2019ve played against this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Match Highlights | Wellington Phoenix v Adelaide United\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YiT7bczZVtw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no shame in losing to a good side like that, but I\u2019m disappointed in the way we performed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t really have our flow, our momentum. I thought we lost way too many battles and ultimately it wasn\u2019t good enough.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While losing at home is frustrating, he remains confident that the side can secure a playoff spot with six games remaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if it will necessarily dent the confidence because we lost at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still in with a chance. And if that isn\u2019t motivation for us then I don\u2019t know what is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can still do it. We just made it a little bit harder. (Photo by Hagen Hopkins\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Adelaide were back on top, forcing Vil\u00e3o into a flurry of saves, including a spectacular tip over the bar from Worts\u2019 shot from six yards out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Annalie Longo, the Nix managed to wrest back control over the game in their search for an equaliser.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longo herself came closest, just unable to properly catch her volley after Tiana Jaber\u2019s teasing cross found her in space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whinham and McMeeken made way for Amelia Abbott and Manaia Elliott with twenty minutes to play as Temple looked to pile on the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of heavy challenges began to fly in from both sides as tensions grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And from one of the ensuing free kicks, Vil\u00e3o produced another outstanding reflex save, gloving McNamara\u2019s header onto the bar when the Matilda looked certain to score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worts was presented with a golden chance to seal the game when Jaber\u2019s high boot caught Dawber.
