{"id":324923,"date":"2025-03-30T19:12:44","date_gmt":"2025-03-30T06:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\/?p=324923"},"modified":"2025-03-30T19:12:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T06:12:46","slug":"ninja-a-league-round-21-match-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellingtonphoenix.com\/news\/ninja-a-league-round-21-match-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Ninja A-League Round 21 Match Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Wellington Phoenix\u2019s playoff hopes have been dealt a hammer blow following a 1-0 loss at Porirua Park to undefeated Melbourne City.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carolina Vil\u00e3o\u2019s second penalty save of the season was not enough to prevent a second straight defeat at home, leaving the Nix four points shy of a playoff spot with two games remaining.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phoenix head coach Paul Temple was disappointed with the result, but was full of praise for the visiting side.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe did put up a brave fight,\u201d he told media post-match. \u201cWe gave a lot to the game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor large parts we did frustrate them. When they go 1-0 up, that changes your game plan. You\u2019ve got to take more risks, be on the front foot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can see why they\u2019re top of the league and unbeaten. They\u2019ve got a bit of everything.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe knew they were going to dominate the ball, but they also dominated physically which you perhaps don&#8217;t expect. They\u2019re mentality monsters, and that\u2019s why they\u2019re top.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he thought the team should have been able to prevent Holly McNamara\u2019s winning goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Match Highlights | Wellington Phoenix v Melbourne City\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jpeo1l_rD_g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s those moments. Generally speaking, we dealt with her pretty well. We haven\u2019t got any other choices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t go to Canberra and get three points, we\u2019re going to be out of the race.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s everything on the line, we know what\u2019s expected of us now. (Photo by Hagen Hopkins\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She had just been involved in another physical battle, Barry supplying a thumping tackle on the Venezuelan international.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City looked the likeliest to score, McNamara screwing another presentable chance wide right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 70th minute saw two more Wellington substitutes introduced as Temple chased an unlikely victory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mebae Tanaka and Alyssa Whinham joined the fray, Main and Alivia Kelly being withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With seven minutes to play, the Nix stitched some quality attacking play together, culminating in Grace Jale crunching a shot over the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a frantic finish, Wellington pouring numbers forward in search of an elusive goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But an equaliser was not forthcoming, leaving the Phoenix in eighth place with two games to play in the regular season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wellington Phoenix have next weekend off due to the last international break of the season, before facing Canberra United away the following Sunday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wellington Phoenix<\/strong>: 39.
